چکیده
The interest in using high vacuum-compatible time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) detectors integrated within focused beam instruments (FIB) has increased due to the possibility of conducting correlative and/or complementary studies with other techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), wavelength spectroscopy, backscatter diffraction, atomic force and Raman without breaking vacuum conditions. This work discusses practical aspects FIB-TOF-SIMS analysis enhanced by fluorine gas. A series systematic experiments high-purity Al Cu single crystals was conducted. We demonstrate that fluorine-assisted yields up several orders magnitude higher SIMS signals chemically improved ionization probability elements. potential gas-assisted correlated benefits are demonstrated on a real-life sample based comparing results EDS TOF-SIMS conducted any Our indicate presence gas reduces negative effect preferential reoxidation surface. enables lateral resolution mapping because not dominated elements strongly oxygen-enhanced probability.

Detection of ZrO2 Nanoparticles in Lung Tissue Sections by Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Ion Beam Microscopy
The increasing use of nanoparticles (NP) in commercial products requires elaborated techniques to detect NP in the tissue of exposed organisms. However, due to the low amount of material, the detection and exact localization of NP within tissue sections is demanding. In this respect, Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and Ion Beam Microscopy (IBM) are promising techniques...
متن کاملTowards practical time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry lignocellulolytic enzyme assays
BACKGROUND Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a surface sensitive mass spectrometry technique with potential strengths as a method for detecting enzymatic activity on solid materials. In particular, ToF-SIMS has been applied to detect the enzymatic degradation of woody lignocellulose. Proof-of-principle experiments previously demonstrated the detection of both lignin-d...

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) coupled to orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF) has shown significant promise for the characterization of complex biological mixtures. The enormous complexity of biological samples (e.g., from proteomics) and the need for both biological and technical analysis replicates imposes major challenges for multidimensional separation platforms with regard t...
متن کاملAnalysis of lung surfactant model systems with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.
An often-used model lung surfactant containing dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG), and the surfactant protein C (SP-C) was analyzed as Langmuir-Blodgett film by spatially resolved time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to directly visualize the formation and composition of domains. Binary lipid and lipid/SP-C systems were probed for ...
متن کاملApplication of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to automobile paint analysis.
Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) provides a method of elemental analysis that can distinguish among automotive paint samples of the same or nearly the same color. TOF-SIMS survey spectra were employed to determine the relative abundances of elements in the surface layers of the paint chips. The depth profile of paint samples permitted the analysis of small paint chips, ...
